Comprehensive Adhesive Solutions for the Filter Industry
Jowat supplies adhesives for every key stage of filter production: from media lamination and pleating to the bonding of filter frames. Wide range of challenges for adhesives
Regardless of the applications, the requirements for the filter media adhesives are always high. The adhesives must be flexible enough to withstand mechanical stresses which can occur during installation and operation. Automotive air filters, for example, often undergo deformation during assembly and must not suffer any damage. At the same time, the bonding must not interfere with the functionality of the filter. In activated carbon binding, for example, it should not compromise filtration efficiency. The adhesive is presented with additional challenges if the manufacturing or assembly process is automated.
“Adhesives used in the mechanical production of filters must provide high initial strength and flexibility,” explains Michael Dressler, product coordinator at Jowat. “Only this combination will facilitate optimized process times and high bonding quality.” However, not every adhesive meets these requirements. An ideal bonding solution for mechanical applications is characterized by easy processing, an adapted viscosity and a rapid development of bonding strength.
Developed for frame bonding
The formulation of Jowatherm® PO 263.25 developed by Jowat provides a nonblocking hot melt adhesive based on polyolefin (PO) and tailored to the requirements in frame bonding. Customers in the filtration industry are already using this adhesive from Jowat for bonding the frames of activated carbon filters for vehicle interiors and other filters with a similar structure. This adhesive is characterized by good processing stability, high adhesion to different materials and can be used in automated manufacturing processes. The formulation provides an optimum combination of flexibility, strength and heat resistance up to 160 degrees Celsius, which makes the adhesive an good solution for applications in the automotive industry and other demanding operations.
At the next FILTECH in Cologne, the adhesive experts from Detmold aim to demonstrate how adhesive technologies help increase efficiency and quality in filter production.
